About us

Our Why

Hello,

My name is Stacey Deering and I have been the owner operator of The Secret Baker since 2011.  As a lifelong crafter I have owned a flower shop, made custom dog beds, been a professional dog trainer, manicurist, and now bakery owner for the past 13 years.  My favorite job of all is being the mother of two amazing boys 17 and 18 years old.

While raising my boys I also care for my folks who lived with us for the past 18 years.

My Mom was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheims at 61. Her battle lasted 8.5 years and it's hard to believe she has been gone for more than 6 ½ years already.  My Dad had an early prostate cancer diagnosis at 58.  He was treated but the disease made a recurrence 15 years later.  I share this part of my journey because I've been in 100’s of doctor offices and observed the countless use of single use items.  Of course they are necessary for the safety of the patient and the caregiver. But, I have witnessed 9 glove changes in a single office visit.  Again, understanding what safety they bring, but wondering where and how all this waste will end up.

In my own business under the Cottage Food Law of California and the Food Handlers Guide, I have to use single use items as well.  Gloves, bags, ribbon, baking supplies, and boxes.

Born in the 70’s I spent my days outside looking up at our blue skies of the magnificent earth and have always been conscious of the globe we live on.

As I don't set out to change the world, I find it important to do my small part to balance the resources that are necessary and keep us healthy and the ones we can choose to use to help limit our waste, lengthen the life of our food, and maybe even our lives.

The newest obsession is the Beeswax Wraps.  Needless to say, I have lived a life of service and love creating and making things that make people happy.  The Beeswax Wraps have been one of the most fun items to date! Beeswax wraps are a great alternative to single use plastic wrap, baggies and foil.  They are made from 100% cotton, beeswax, Jojoba oil and a pine resin that makes them sticky. They stick to themselves and they stick to the sides of your bowls or other containers that you would use a single use product for.  They can be washed and reused for a year or more!.  One of the main benefits of beeswax wraps is food preservation. It is breathable and allows food to stay fresh longer, reducing food waste.  They are washed with cold, soapy water and air dry in 30 minutes.  Beeswax has antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties which is a benefit to our health along with our planet.  Beeswax is safe and non toxic and may have amazing health benefits, including lowering cholesterol levels and inflammation.

I have teamed up with old friends. The beautiful and talented Whitney Umphrey, whom actually was part of the creation of The Secret Baker so many years ago. And Justin, her brilliant husband photographer, genius videographer and our tech guy behind the senses.  Together we hope to bring you a great new product that you can incorporate into your daily lives and reduce the plastic and metals that are turning up in our oceans and in our bodies.
